How It Works
How It Works
Step 1: Prepare Your Tree or Plant
Make sure your tree or plant is upright. Clear any large debris or branches that may interfere with the cover. For potted plants, make sure your pot is stable and in its final position before getting started.
Step 2: Assemble and Place Your Stake
Your stake comes in multiple pieces so you can adjust the height to fit your needs. Assemble the sections and push the stake firmly into the ground or into your pot a few inches away from the base of your tree or plant. The stake should stand upright and extend above the top of your tree or plant. The stake is what gives the Tree Defender its shape and keeps it from collapsing onto your plant.
Step 3: Place the Cover Over Your Tree or Plant
With your stake in place, lower the Tree Defender down over your tree or plant from the top, letting the stake run up through the inside of the cover as it comes down. The cover should fully enclose the foliage down to the base.
Step 4: Secure the Top
Use the provided reusable zip tie to fasten the top of the Tree Defender to the stake. This keeps the cover securely in place and prevents it from shifting or coming loose over time.
Step 5: Secure the Base
This is one of the most important steps. A well secured base is what keeps pests out. Here are your options depending on your setup:
In-ground trees: Pull the base of the cover as close to the ground as possible. Weigh it down, stake it, or tie it off to keep it in place.
Potted plants: Secure the base of the cover to the pot, tie it off at the bottom, or let the cover drape to the ground and wrap around the outside of the pot.
Skirted bottom versions: Spread the skirt evenly around the base and secure it flat against the ground or pot for the best seal.
Step 6: Check for Gaps
Walk around your tree or plant and look for any open spaces. A snug, secure fit all the way around is key to effective protection.

Care & Growth
Care & Growth
Tree Defender keeps your tree or plant protected while giving it the optimal growing environment from day one.
Ongoing Care
Water as normal, no need to remove the cover
To fertilize, follow the steps for your style:
Standard: Lift the bottom slightly and apply underneath
Skirted: Lift the bottom ring and apply underneath
Skirted with Potted Plant: Unzip, fertilize, zip back up
Check periodically for gaps and make sure your stake is still firmly in place
Use the zipper if included for easy access and monitoring
Year-Round Use
Tree Defender can stay on year-round during early growth stages. The breathable mesh acts like a mini greenhouse, providing the optimal growing environment while letting in airflow, sunlight, and moisture.
When to Remove
Our most popular 6ft version is typically used for approximately 2 years, though faster growing varieties may fill the cover sooner. Once your tree or plant is established, the cover can be removed.
Proper Fit Matters
Keep the cover secure at the top and base. A snug fit at ground level is your best defense against pests. Check occasionally for gaps to maintain effective protection.
